Cooperations and certificates

LOT's headquarters has once again been certified as a Green Office. This is a program of the Foundation for Environmental Education, which supports and promotes offices that practice sustainable practices such as, segregating waste, reducing water, electricity and paper use. We received the certificate for the first time in 2018 and continue to operate in accordance with its requirements while striving to improve our operations. In 2025, we were once again audited and certified for another 2 years.

In December 2024, we were again certified as a Partner for the Climate. The project is coordinated by the City of Warsaw, and PLL LOT is its long-term partner. The premise of the initiative is environmental education, knowledge exchange and taking joint action to reduce climate change.

We have joined the Renewable and Low-Carbon Fuels Value Chain Industrial Alliance created by the European Commission, which brings together participants in the sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) supply chain at every stage. The main goal of the initiative is to increase SAF production, storage and distribution capacity. Two LOT representatives have been appointed as experts on sustainable aviation fuels and the availability of raw materials for the production of these fuels.

We have established the cooperation with the Łukasiewicz Research Network – Aviation Institute thanks to which the actual emission of greenhouse gases, i.e. carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide from PLL LOT aircraft has been calculated. The cooperation will allow for the determination of the true impact of our aircraft on the environment and the extended R&D cooperation.

We have signed a Letter of Intent with PKN ORLEN starting cooperation on sustainable fuels (SAF) and their implementation in civil aviation. A vegetable oil hydrogenation unit is also planned in the PKN ORLEN refinery in Płock. As part of the cooperation we will use the acquired SAF on all connections from the airports to which they will be supplied. By using SAF, we will reduce CO₂ emissions by 80% over the entire product life cycle.

We have joined the IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) programme, a flagship programme for airlines willing to implement and adapt the environmental management system to standards of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and to ISO 14001.

The environment and sustainability are very important aspects of the aviation industry's operations. In line with the established goal of net zero emissions by 2050, we need to strive to decarbonise aviation. IEnvA is a very good start towards achieving this goal.

In 2019, we started working with the State Forests under the Forest Carbon Farms programme. The cooperation continues to this day. Its purpose is to search for solutions to offset CO₂ emissions.

The great value of our cooperation is the possibility to conduct long-term projects in Poland the effects of which we will be able to follow at every stage of their implementation. The aim of the project is to capture and retain CO₂ through Polish forests. This year, we took part in the auction of Carbon Dioxide Units (CDUs) for the third time.

CDU is the quantity of organic carbon equal to 1 tonne of CO₂ that gets accumulated in forest stands and in the soil as a result of additional activities.

More about Carbon Dioxide Units

CDUs refer to carbon dioxide that is absorbed in addition to the amount that forests absorb under normal conditions. The activities carried out by the State Forests consist of afforestation and the introduction of fast-growing tree species such as Douglas fir; the introduction of second-growth trees and undergrowth, increasing the area of natural regeneration and measures to prevent excessive damage to the soil surface. According to a study carried out by the State Forests, Forest Carbon Farms will absorb an almost 1 million tonnes of additional CO₂ within 30 years. In other words, each hectare of a forest where an additional measure is implemented during this period will additionally absorb approximately 37 tonnes of carbon.

The cooperation with the State Forests and the purchase of Carbon Dioxide Units are possible thanks to the Destination Eco programme. Each passenger can join our efforts and minimise their impact on the environment by declaring a voluntary contribution at the final stage of ticket purchase. The proceeds go towards environmental projects.
