Larnaca and Paphos — a brief overview. Where to fly for your vacation?

Larnaca, located on the eastern coast of Cyprus, is the third-largest city on the island and one of its oldest settlements. The city offers scenic promenades and sunny beaches. The international airport in Larnaca is often the first destination visited by tourists arriving in Cyprus.

On the other hand, Paphos is a seaside gem on the western coast of the island. This city with a rich history also has an international airport, albeit with less traffic than Larnaca’s. The city of Paphos is more intimate, which can be an advantage for those seeking tranquillity.

Larnaca landmarks

When it comes to interesting historical attractions, Larnaca doesn't disappoint! The city, which for centuries has been an important hub of commerce and culture, offers tourists plenty to enjoy.

Medieval castle in Larnaca — Medieval Museum

It's worth spending 30–40 minutes travelling to visit Larnaka Medieval Castle — a castle built to protect the port, which for a time served as a prison. Today, the castle houses a modest Medieval Museum, encompassing just three rooms. The building is located on the seaside promenade and offers wonderful views of the coast, attracting numerous enthusiasts of history and architecture.

Church of St Lazarus in Larnaca — building on a tomb

If you are enchanted by historic churches, see the Orthodox church which, according to the Cypriot Orthodox Church, was built above the saint's tomb. Larnaca is renowned for this temple, thanks to the remains of Lazarus resting beneath it — a man who, according to legend, was resurrected by Christ, later arrived in Cyprus and served as the bishop of Kition for many years.

Ayia Napa city — one of the most famous resorts in Cyprus

Larnaca is located near the city of Ayia Napa, which is also worth a visit. In Ayia Napa you'll find attractions for water sports enthusiasts, beautiful landmarks and even more beautiful beaches. There is also an old monastery, now converted into a museum (free admission), as well as the Thalassa Maritime Museum.

Skala — a neighborhood like in days gone by

The Skala district in Larnaca is known for its traditional architecture and is one of the few places on the island where you can see authentic Cypriot homes. The old Turkish quarter winds its way through small, atmospheric streets in the southern part of the city.

After the Turkish invasion, the district was abandoned and fell into oblivion. Recently, thanks to Larnaca’s artistic community, which has started relocating its ceramic workshops here, it has become an even more interesting place to visit.

Paphos landmarks

Paphos also abounds with tourist attractions. It's a place where you can find landmarks from virtually every era, which is why the city has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Medieval castle in Paphos — fortress with a turbulent past

The medieval castle in Paphos, located right on the seashore, is one of the most recognizable landmarks on the island. Paphos Castle dates back to the Byzantine era and is the first fortress guarding access to the port. In the past, it also served as a prison and later as a salt warehouse. Today, recognized as a monument, it serves exclusively cultural functions.

Royal tombs — tombs of kings, without kings

Despite its name, the Royal Tombs in Paphos were not used for the burial of kings, but for wealthy aristocrats and officials during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. This ancient necropolis is located to the northwest of the city. The rock-cut tombs are renowned for their monumental architecture and frescoes.

Paphos archaeological park — ruins of an ancient city

The archaeological park is open every day (except on holidays), and admission costs just a few euros. Among the most important remains discovered so far are four large and exquisite Roman villas: the House of Dionysus, the House of Aion, the House of Theseus, and the House of Orpheus, all featuring exquisitely preserved mosaic floors.

Entertainment — which city offers more attractions? Where are the better clubs?

Larnaca offers many forms of entertainment, from water sports such as windsurfing and diving to lively bars and nightclubs. In Paphos, recreational spots are also plentiful. You can set off on a coastal cruise, tour the local vineyards, and in the evening visit local tavernas where Cypriot specialities are served. Larnaca and Paphos are cities full of attractions!

In Larnaca you'll find Ammos Beach Bar or Savino Rock Bar — one of the few bars in Cyprus where rock music predominates. Although the appearance of Paphos might suggest otherwise, this town also offers a vibrant nightlife, thanks to its many bars, clubs, and restaurants providing entertainment and live music. Examples include Loft Club, Muse Cafe Kitchen Bar, and Robin Hood. There’s definitely a place to stop for a drink (or two)!

Cypriots even say that it should be in the top five. It is definitely something worth seeing in Larnaca. However, keep in mind that diving qualifications are required to explore the ship.

Aphrodite festival in Paphos

An interesting attraction in Paphos is the annual Aphrodite Festival, which takes place at the castle by the port. The festival features various cultural events — including concerts, theatrical performances, and dance shows — that reference the mythology associated with Aphrodite, who, according to legend, was born from sea foam near Paphos.

Gastronomy — where is the better food? Which city in Cyprus offers more enticing restaurants?

The cuisine of Paphos and Larnaca is generally quite similar. Due to its relatively small size, Cyprus has not developed a diverse regional cuisine. The island, culturally close to Greece, draws on the richness of Mediterranean flavours, enhancing them with local ingredients. Owing to historical upheavals, Turkish influences can also be found in its gastronomy.

Larnaca offers a wide selection of restaurants serving both local and international dishes. You can try seafood as well as traditional Cypriot dishes and products, such as meze and halloumi. Paphos is also a paradise for food lovers. In the city centre, you'll find traditional tavernas that offer authentic dishes prepared according to time-honoured recipes.

Nature — what is worth seeing in the vicinity of Paphos and Larnaca?

Cyprus boasts an incredibly diverse natural landscape. Here you'll find mountains, the sea, forests, and wetlands. Along the island’s coastline, you can come across numerous rock formations that serve as homes to many species of marine life. On the island, you'll also encounter praying mantises, endemic species of butterflies, and the Cypriot mouflon, whose curved horns impress tourists from around the world.

Larnaca Salt Lake — a place where flamingos turn pink

The Larnaca Salt Lake is actually a complex of four interconnected lakes: Aliki, Orphani, Soros, and Spiro. In summer, the basin is almost completely lifeless. In winter — it comes back to life. It fills with water and attracts numerous bird species to visit this extraordinary place.

Among them are the iconic flamingos. Interestingly, these birds arrive in Cyprus with white plumage, and only thanks to a specific diet rich in shrimp do their feathers acquire their characteristic pink hue. It is certainly something worth seeing!

The contest between Larnaca and Paphos is very evenly matched. Both Larnaca and Paphos have plenty to offer, so our choice is not clear-cut. Ultimately, the decision on where to stay depends on your individual preferences.

If a metropolitan atmosphere is important to you — perhaps Larnaca would be the better choice, as it is theoretically a bit larger and more modern. There, you will likely find better clubs (although, in practice, neither of these cities is a typical metropolis). For history enthusiasts, the atmosphere of Paphos is more convincing. It is also a great choice for travellers seeking beautiful nature. It is there, according to legend, that the Greek goddess of love, born from sea foam, stepped ashore near the beach.

If you're still unsure where to stay — don't worry. The small size of the island is an advantage in this context. The two cities are only about 130 km apart — roughly a one-and-a-half-hour drive.
